CDU – Renal Colic

For those who’s history and examination is consistent with Renal Stones and require CTKUB, for diagnosis.

Specific admission criteria

  • History consistent with renal stone
  • AAA excluded (over 50 years old)
  • Not pregnant or within 3 months post partum
  • Requires immediate CT (Others can be performed 08:00-21:00)
    • Anuric
    • Acute Kidney Injuryo Single Kidney
    • Sepsis
    • Diabetes
    • Immuno-compromise

Tasks to complete during admission

  • Full Nursing observations 4 hourly
  • Analgesia
  • Urine output and strain (collect any stones)

Post CTKUB

  • Stone Passed – Urology Follow up arranged
  • Stone confirmed – Urology Referral (Add Ca & Uric acid to blood)
  • No Abnormality
    • Haematuria (Frank/++) – Urology Referral
    • No Haematuria – GP follow up
  • Other Abnormality – Senior review & and appropriate referral

Discharge Criteria

  • Urology Follow up arranged (if required)
  • Actions explained to patient
  • Letter to GP

Hospital Admission Criteria

• Deterioration (Must have review by ED team)
