Slings!

Video tutorials for the procedure for the application of some basic slings.

Broad Arm Sling – triangular bandage

Commonly used for injuries to the shoulder, upper arm, elbow and forearm where high elevation isn’t required.

High Arm Sling -triangular bandage

Used for injuries to the forearm wrist and hand where elevation is required , such as to reduce swelling or bleeding.

Collar and Cuff

Can be more comfortable and durable than a triangular bandage sling, where appropriate. Particularly useful for humeral fractures where some gravitational traction is required (this should be with the wrist elevated slightly above the elbow). There are a few manufactures/systems for these slings, I have included instructions for two main types of application.

Polysling

These come in a variety of styles from different manufactures. Application is essentially the same in most cases though. Useful where longer lasting and/or comprehensive support is required. These are a lot more comfortable and durable than a triangular sling and easier for the patient to remove and reapply. The also have a body strap which prevents ‘winging’ of the elbow.

The process of application is similar for most manufacturers, but manufacturer’s instruction should be adhered to.

Maudsley Sling

Can be used in place of a broad arm sling and polysling in a lot of cases. Especially useful in clavicle fractures as it provides similar support as a traditional triangular sling without putting pressure on the clavicle. They also prevent ‘winging’ of the arm .
