Preform intimate examinations on Sexual assault/Rape patients
- Unless life-threatening injuries are suspected e.g Haemorrhage.
- As our examination will inevitably destroy evidence that may aid this patient’s case
Do’s
- Consider contamination injury (HIV, HepB, HepC) – Guide
- Consider emergency contraception
- Children must have police referral for safeguarding and discussion with social care. The paediatricians in CHT may be able to offer support in navigation of services but the responsibility for non-urgent medical assessment lies with specialists at SARC.
- Refer to The Sexual Assault Referral Centre, either via Police or Self referral

24hr Police Referrals- adults and children
Self-referral generally booked appointments 8am-8pm
- Self- referrals for adults with capacity will not involve police.
- Non-police involvement , can switch to police referral at any point as patient chooses, samples stored for 7 yrs.
- Services: Top to toe examination, samples collected, pregnancy testing
- Aftercare: HIV PEP, Emergency Contraception,
- Offered shower and given washbag with toiletries, towels, clothing
- Can refer to other health services including mental health worker, domestic abuse services and sexual violence advisor.
- Will provide follow-up support
